Nothing has changed in the case design. There is a strong resemblance to the last generation Clevo found here. Instead of using the W350ET barebone (HM77 chipset), we now rely on the W350ST barebone (HM87 chipset).
One of the biggest modifications is found on the wrist rest that is now no longer rubber-coated and less receptive to greasy fingerprints. Clevo unfortunately has not replaced the display's glossy bezel with a matte alternative. In contrast to the 15-inch P150SM and P157SM, the bezel is extremely susceptible to scratches. Just careful polishing quickly leads to small discernible cosmetic damage. The brushed aluminum looks of the lid can only compensate for this flaw to a certain extent.
The quality of the case is pretty good if you ignore (with some difficulty) this design flaw. The laptop does not feel cheap even if it is shrouded in tons and tons of cheap plastic. When we disregard the lid and vents as the obvious points of weakness in the chassis, the overall stiffness is more than decent. The base unit barely yields even under higher force. The laptop case is stiff even when you consider the height of the base section at around 44 mm which is not very surprising when you consider high-performance machines from other vendors too. But you can find a few thin pieces that go against the norm of ‘fat and ugly’ machines like the Samsung's 770Z5E (Radeon HD 8870M) which is only about half as thick. It is generally possible to carry the notebook quite comfortably. This is also due to the slim power supply (147 x 75 x 26 millimeters) that is much smaller and lighter than the one in the W350ET barebone (462 vs. 742 grams). We would have liked to see a new hinge design as the chassis is prone to wobbling and both hands are absolutely needed when you need to open the lid.
Unlike the P series, the keyboards in the A series do not feature a backlight. The chicklet keys (also called a chocolate design) are functional at best. The keyboard quality is well made for the most part. The square keys are fairly well-sized at 15 mm and the keyboard is well reinforced at the bottom and exhibits no flex which is a very big advantage over older generations. The typing feel is also decent.
The ‘0 key’ in the four column number pad has been halved in size so that the arrow keys could be implemented in full-size. Apart from that, the layout is standard. Clevo could improve the typing noise. Like in the past, the keyboard sounds a bit too noisy for or liking. Nevertheless, it is still pretty good for large productivity tasks.
The touchpad is also largely satisfactory. The 92 x 47 millimeter area makes it easy to work with. Clevo slightly lowers the mouse replacement for better localization. That is also very necessary because the color and surface match that of the wrist area. In contrast to other 15-inch barebones, the manufacturer does not apply a rubber coating (P150SM) or provide a rough texture (W150ER) which has a positive effect on the gliding traits. It’s accuracy is compelling despite the slippery feel.
Another advantage is the multi-touch support. The practical gestures like zoom, scroll and rotate are usually implemented perfectly. Users who prefer the classic input method can use the horizontal and vertical scroll area at the edges of the touchpad. Opposing the current ClickPad trend, the manufacturer installs dedicated mouse keys. They are a bit loud but provide decent mechanics. Deactivating the touchpad in games is not necessary owing to its centered position.
The laptop comes with a standard 1080p matte screen. If the user needs high color fidelity, we would recommend an upgrade to the better 95% gamut screen available in the options.
A 900p screen wouldn’t have looked out of place on a 15.6-inch laptop but it would have defeated the purpose of the machine as being a high-performance machine. The additional screen real estate is especially beneficial when you consider workloads that include general productivity and multi-tasking in multiple GUIs. Glossy screens generally output better colors but matte screens have caught up. Now they are generally ignored as they are susceptible to reflections.
This laptop is not suitable to be used in extremely bright environments due to the poor brightness levels of the screen. The user will find it particularly hard to read the screen content on extremely bright days or in direct sun light. You can have a look at the images of the laptop screen when used in such conditions.
We are very aware that the screen is one of the places that costs can be cut to bring out a cheaper device. Cost savings in the form of the application of cheaper TN technology for the panel resulted in pretty poor viewing angles. Vertically, any change in the angle can cause extreme drops in image fidelity and brightness levels. Horizontal viewing angles are a lot more stable compared to the vertical viewing angles. But this level of performance is extremely poor when you compare it to better screen technologies like IPS or Samsung’s PLS panel technology.

The Intel Core i7-4700MQ is a high-end quad-core processor for laptops. It is based on the Haswell architecture and manufactured in 22nm. Due to Hyperthreading, the four cores can handle up to eight threads in parallel leading to better utilization of the CPU. Each core offers a base speed of 2.4 GHz but can dynamically increase clock rates with Turbo Boost up to 3.2 GHz (for 4 active cores), 3.3 GHz (for 2 active cores) and 3.4 GHz (for 1 active core).
Haswell is the successor to the Ivy Bridge architecture with improvements on both GPU and CPU performance. The CPUs are produced in 22nm and offer an optimized branch prediction as well as additional execution ports, improving especially the Hyper-Threading performance. Furthermore, new features like AVX2 and FMA should increase the performance in future applications.
The performance of the Core i7-4700MQ is slightly above a similarly clocked Sandy Bridge processor due to the architectural improvements. As a result, overall performance is similar to the Ivy Bridge based Core i7-3740QM.
The integrated Intel HD Graphics 4600 offers 20 Execution Units (EUs) clocked at 400 MHz up to 1150 MHz with Turbo Boost, making it about 30 % faster than the HD 4000.
The i7-4700MQ is rated at a TDP of 47 W including graphics card, memory controller and VRMs. Therefore, the CPU is only suited for laptops 15-inches or greater.
HI-TECH uses only full-copper heatpipe cooling. This type of cooling ensures optimal conditions and makes this unique notebook: While HI-TECH only uses this technology, other manufacturers often obstruct only inferior aluminum / copper hybrid or even pure aluminum coolers. These have a much worse cooling performance. Especially in gaming applications when devices are heavily used, there is a risk that the unit overheats. This leads to the fact that the individual components down contacts for reasons of protection, which minimizes the power of the device enormously. In the worst case, there could be breakdowns and could shorten the life lead. With the HI-TECH-copper heatpipe cooling in contrast the notebook is perfectly chilled even under extreme stress!
Need some examples? Maximum 34.9 ° C on the top and a maximum of 34.5 ° C on the bottom are given the high performance, a very low value. NVIDIA GeForce GTX 765M, the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 765M is a upper mid-range DirectX 11-compatible graphics card for laptops. Compared to the GTX 760M, the 765M offers a higher core clock rate of the same GK106 chip.
As a novelty, the GeForce 700M series implements GPU Boost 2.0 to automatically overclock the core clock rate. Depending on the cooling headroom of the laptop and the application / game, up to 15 % performance gains are possible.
The Kepler architecture is the successor to the Fermi architecture that first appeared in laptops with the GeForce 400M series. The GK106 Kepler core offers five shader blocks, called SMX, that are clocked at the same speed as the central core. In the GTX 765M, four blocks are active for a total of 768 CUDA cores. Although the Kepler architecture can utilize more shader cores than a Fermi chip, its shaders can be up to twice as power efficient. However, due to the missing hot clock of the shader domain, two shaders of a Kepler chip are of similar speed to one shader of a Fermi chip (as the latter is clocked twice as fast).
PCIe 3.0 is now supported by the mobile Kepler series and an optional Turbo mode can automatically overclock the Nvidia card by a theoretical 15 percent if the laptop cooling system allows it. The implementation of this boost mode is done in the BIOS, but it is ultimately dependent upon the manufacturer of the laptop.
The graphics performance of the GeForce GTX 765M is clearly above the GTX 660M thanks to the higher amount of shaders. The maximum performance may differ a bit depending on the cooling solution of the used laptop (due to GPU Boost 2.0 better colling solutions lead to a better performance). In our tests the average performance of the GTX 765M was above the older GTX 670MX. Demanding games like Metro: Last Light, Crysis 3, Far Cry 3 or even SimCity were only playable in 1366x768 pixels and high detail settings at fluent frame rates. Older and less demanding games like Star Craft 2 however were playable in Full HD with all settings set to max.
The feature set of the GTX765M is identical to the GTX670MX as both are based on the same GK106 core. Therefore the GPU supports up to 4 active displays. Furthermore, high resolution monitors of up to 3840x2160 pixels can now be connected using DisplayPort 1.2 or HDMI 1.4a if available. HD-Audio codecs, such as Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD, can be transmitted via bitstream mode through the HDMI port. However, as most laptops will feature Optimus, the integrated GPU will likely have direct control over the display ports and may limit the feature set available by the Nvidia Kepler cards.
The 5th generation PureVideo HD video processor (VP5) is also integrated in the GK104 core and offers hardware decoding of HD videos. Common codecs such as MPEG-1/2, MPEG-4 ASP, H.264 and VC1/WMV9 are fully supported up to 4K resolutions while VC1 and MPEG-4 are supported up to 1080p. Two streams can be decoded in parallel for features such as Picture-in-Picture. Finally, the dedicated video encoding engine called NVENC API similar to Intel QuickSync is integrated in the chip.
The power consumption of the GeForce GTX 765M should be between 50 and 75 Watt (660M to 670MX according to rumors) and is therefore best suited for large notebooks (15-inches or greater) and desktop replacements.:

Da ich wirklich nur World of Warcraft und Fifa 12 damit spiele kann ich nicht sagen was alles möglich ist, aber es ist ein Top Gerät und lässt die Spiele nochmal frischer wirken. Warum auch immer schwitzt meine linke Hand etwas stärker als sonst bei der W,A,S,D Auflage. Hatte ich bis jetzt noch nicht, gebe aber keinen Punktabzug da ich nicht sagen kann ob es wirklich am Gerät liegt.
