One of the key differences to the 17-inch siblings P177SM and P370EM is the fact that the lid and palm rest do not feature a rubberized finish, but are covered with a thin sheet of aluminum instead. The brushed finish looks pretty upscale - but we question Clevo's decision to stick with the highly reflective and extremely delicate glossy borders of the predecessor P170EM. At least the display bezel is now matte instead of glossy.
Physically and visually - partly because of the very square design - the notebook is a behemoth: the size of 412 x 276 x 53 millimeters makes it one of the largest systems currently available. The large thickness has its advantages, as the notebook is quite sturdy. The base unit is able to resist even strong pressure, although the lid could be a little more resilient.
The port selection mirrors the Haswell sister-models P150SM, P157SM, and P177SM to a tee. Three USB 3.0 ports (one of them is an eSATA/USB combo-port) are impressive - and so are the four audio jacks, which enable 7.1 output. In other words: with the right selection of cables, a surround system can be hooked up to the notebook. Three digital display outputs (HDMI, DisplayPort, and Mini DisplayPort), an infrared sensor, and a Mini FireWire port round out the selection.
The other ports are standard fare: there is an RJ-45 Gigabit LAN connector, a Kensington lock slot, and one USB 2.0 port. The integrated card reader supports almost 10 different types of cards (see column on the right). The webcam offers Full HD resolution (2 MP). A fingerprint reader is located between the two touchpad mouse buttons.
Our review model features an Intel Centrino Ultimate-N 6300, which supports standards 802.11 a/g/n. According to the homepage, the PCIe card not only supports 2.4 GHz, but also 5.0 GHz and can handle data transfer rates of up to 450 Mbit/s. The module does not support Bluetooth, however - and the very good range only partly makes up for that deficit.

Clevo makes maintaining and upgrading the system exceptionally easy. While other notebook manufacturers just provide access to the RAM and the hard drive - see for example the Toshiba Qosmio X870 - the One K73-3N allows the user to also get to the fan, the graphics card, and the processor (all of which can be replaced).
The maintenance covers on the bottom can be removed with a regular Phillips screwdriver. The photos in the right hand column document accessibility - some components are somewhat hidden. One of the mSATA slots is located under the space for the primary 2.5-inch hard drive; the secondary 2.5-inch hard drive sits under the optical drive. The four RAM slots are split up between both sides of the motherboard, which means that in order to gain access to the second set (and also the wireless module), the keyboard has to be removed.
Clevo experts will recognize the keyboard, as it looks to be a carry-over from the predecessor P170EM. They keyboard is not completely identical though - the FN key is now located next to the right ALT key instead of the left one and the > < | - key also moved. The German version of the keyboard also has to make do with an Enter key that doesn't span two rows, but sits in a single row instead. Touch typists will need some time to get used to the layout.
After some practice, we were able to use the keyboard without issues. Clevo appears to have reduced the stiffness of the keys, which is something we criticized in our previous review. The keyboard now feels a little softer, although the feedback is still well defined and precise. We liked the click-point, feedback, and the sound the keys produce. Fortunately, we also didn't encounter the issues with key inputs not being recognized occasionally, which is something that marred the typing experience with the first generation of the backlit keyboard.
Speaking of backlit: the included software (see screenshot) allows the user to assign different colors to three sections. A late-night gaming session in a dimly-lit room is certainly possible.
The touchpad measures 90 x 48 millimeters. On paper, its stats look good: there are horizontal and vertical scroll bars as well as multi-gesture support for turning images, scrolling, and zooming.
When we started putting the touchpad through its paces, we uncovered a few shortcomings: first of all, the surface is flush with the palm rest, which makes locating the edges difficult. The touchpad is often imprecise and cursor control suffers at times - especially if the fingers are wet. The textured surface also doesn't allow fingers to glide easily.
As far as the overall usability of the touchpad is concerned, Clevo definitely has room for improvement. Other barebones - like the W150ER and the P150SM - show that Clevo generally has issues with touchpad quality.
Clevo uses the same 17.3-inch Chi Mei N173HGE-L11 (CMO1720) Full HD display panel also found in the high-end P177SM barebone. It's not surprising that the measurements are very similar: we recorded a maximum brightness of 290 cd/m² for the One K73-3N, which is quite a bit higher than the average of 200-250 cd/m².
The black level is also very good: 0.35 cd/m² ensures that dark scenes appear mostly black and not gray. We also can't complain about the contrast ratio of 870:1, which is better than what most competitors are capable of. The average notebook display tops out at 300 to 500:1. Considering this is a non-glare screen, colors are quite vivid. The small issues with color accuracy (see CalMAN screenshots) are not severe enough to be noticeable to the average user.
In theory, the K73-3N should be perfectly suited for outdoor use, since the screen is both bright and non-glare. Unfortunately though, the brightness decreases by 50% when the notebook is running on battery power. We don't know if this is a bug or a feature which is supposed to increase the battery life. Those wanting to use the notebook outside should make sure that an outlet is nearby. The 15-inch P150SM also has the same issue.
Multiple windows are no problem thanks to the resolution of 1920x1080 pixels. Even though the GeForce GTX 770M is pushed to its limits at times, we think that Full HD is the perfect resolution. The times where HD+ resolution (1600x900) was sufficient for gaming are a thing of the past. The display does very well with non-native resolutions - even at 1366x768 pixels, the sharpness is acceptable.
Horizontally, the viewing angle stability is acceptable despite a noticeable yellow cast. Typically for TN panels, deviations from the vertical - especially from below - quickly result in a deterioration of the picture quality. That doesn't mean that the K73-3N is worse than the competition: less expensive TN panels often have issues with the picture quality much sooner.

The Intel Core i7-4700MQ is a high-end quad-core processor for laptops. It is based on the Haswell architecture and manufactured in 22nm. Due to Hyperthreading, the four cores can handle up to eight threads in parallel leading to better utilization of the CPU. Each core offers a base speed of 2.4 GHz but can dynamically increase clock rates with Turbo Boost up to 3.2 GHz (for 4 active cores), 3.3 GHz (for 2 active cores) and 3.4 GHz (for 1 active core).
Haswell is the successor to the Ivy Bridge architecture with improvements on both GPU and CPU performance. The CPUs are produced in 22nm and offer an optimized branch prediction as well as additional execution ports, improving especially the Hyper-Threading performance. Furthermore, new features like AVX2 and FMA should increase the performance in future applications.
The performance of the Core i7-4700MQ is slightly above a similarly clocked Sandy Bridge processor due to the architectural improvements. As a result, overall performance is similar to the Ivy Bridge based Core i7-3740QM.
The integrated Intel HD Graphics 4600 offers 20 Execution Units (EUs) clocked at 400 MHz up to 1150 MHz with Turbo Boost, making it about 30 % faster than the HD 4000.
The i7-4700MQ is rated at a TDP of 47 W including graphics card, memory controller and VRMs. Therefore, the CPU is only suited for laptops 15-inches or greater.
HI-TECH uses only full-copper heatpipe cooling. This type of cooling ensures optimal conditions and makes this unique notebook: While HI-TECH only uses this technology, other manufacturers often obstruct only inferior aluminum / copper hybrid or even pure aluminum coolers. These have a much worse cooling performance. Especially in gaming applications when devices are heavily used, there is a risk that the unit overheats. This leads to the fact that the individual components down contacts for reasons of protection, which minimizes the power of the device enormously. In the worst case, there could be breakdowns and could shorten the life lead. With the HI-TECH-copper heatpipe cooling in contrast the notebook is perfectly chilled even under extreme stress!
Need some examples? Maximum 34.9 ° C on the top and a maximum of 34.5 ° C on the bottom are given the high performance, a very low value. Make long gaming sessions are extremely comfortable, more than 24.5 ° C we could not measure on the palm rest. In idle mode, not even a temperature of 28.4 ° C is exceeded.
One might assume that the low surface temperatures expense of its components. But thought wrong: In our several-hour full load test (Furmark & Prime), the processor and the graphics card was far from critical regions, a maximum of 76 respectively 80 ° C gave the CPUID from Hardware Monitor. In idle mode, the components are shuttled one to nearly 40 ° C.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780M. The NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780M is a high-end DirectX 11-compatible graphics card for laptops. It is based on the same chip as the GeForce GTX 680MX but offers a higher core clock at a lower TDP. It is based on the 28nm GK104 Kepler architecture similar to the GTX 680M, but features more CUDA cores (1536 vs. 1344), a higher clock rate and GPU Boost 2.0. As of summer 2013, it is the fastest laptop graphics card on the market.
As a novelty, the GeForce 700M series implements GPU Boost 2.0 to automatically overclock the core clock rate. Depending on the cooling headroom of the laptop and the application / game, up to 15 % performance gains are possible.
The Kepler architecture is the successor to the Fermi architecture that first appeared in laptops with the GeForce 400M series. The GK104 Kepler core offers eight shader blocks, called SMX, that are clocked at the same speed as the central core. In the GTX 780M, all eight blocks are active for a total of 1536 CUDA cores. Although the Kepler architecture can utilize more shader cores than a Fermi chip, its shaders can be up to twice as power efficient. However, due to the missing hot clock of the shader domain, two shaders of a Kepler chip are of similar speed to one shader of a Fermi chip (as the latter is clocked twice as fast).
PCIe 3.0 is now supported by the mobile Kepler series and an optional Turbo mode can automatically overclock the Nvidia card by a theoretical 15 percent if the laptop cooling system allows it. The implementation of this boost mode is done in the BIOS, but it is ultimately dependent upon the manufacturer of the laptop.
In our gaming tests the GeForce GTX 780M was able to gain a 30 percent lead to the older Nvidia Geforce GTX680M thanks to the additional shader cores and higher clock rates. That makes the GTX 780M the fastest single mobile graphics card in summer 2013. The GPU has enough power to run demanding games of 2012 fluently with Full HD resolution and maxed out graphical settings. Battlefield 3, Skyrim, and Crysis 2, for example, are playable at the highest detail settings (see benchmarks below).
The improved feature set now includes support for up to 4 active displays. Furthermore, high resolution monitors of up to 3840x2160 pixels can now be connected using DisplayPort 1.2 or HDMI 1.4a if available. HD-Audio codecs, such as Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD, can be transmitted via bitstream mode through the HDMI port. However, as most laptops will feature Optimus, the integrated GPU will likely have direct control over the display ports and may limit the feature set available by the Nvidia Kepler cards.
The 5th generation PureVideo HD video processor (VP5) is also integrated in the GK104 core and offers hardware decoding of HD videos. Common codecs such as MPEG-1/2, MPEG-4 ASP, H.264 and VC1/WMV9 are fully supported up to 4K resolutions while VC1 and MPEG-4 are supported up to 1080p. Two streams can be decoded in parallel for features such as Picture-in-Picture. Another novelty is the inclusion of a dedicated video encoding engine similar to Intel QuickSync that can be accessed by the NVENC API.
The power consumption of the GeForce GTX 780M should be similar or slightly higher than the GTX 680M (100 Watt TDP). According to rumors it should stay below the GTX 680MX in the iMac but still it is best suited for 17-inch desktop replacement laptops.
