The casing of the HI-TECH N170RD is completely made of plastic. The surface is not textured anywhere. The base unit's upper side and the lid's back are rubber coated. The speaker bar is located above the keyboard and slanted toward the user. The prominent power button is found between the speaker bar and keyboard. Two easy to open maintenance covers that enable accessing all hardware components is on the device's underside.

The casing features a solid build. The device does not exhibit major shortcomings in terms of stability. The casing is quite easy to dent on the left edge above the optical drive - but we see this behavior in many computers. The base unit could be stiffer; it is a bit too easy to warp for our taste. The same is true for the lid, which then displays distorted images. They are also produced when pressure is applied to the lid's back. The hinges keep the lid firmly in position, but opening the lid with one hand is possible.


The interface diversity does not exhibit any big surprises. Three video-outs are installed. The four implemented USB ports all support the USB 3.0 standard. The laptop's interfaces are distributed on the left and right sides and on the rear. Consequently, cables will not clutter the sides of the wrist rest.


A chiclet keyboard with a two-level backlight is installed in the laptop. The main keys have a size of approximately 15 x 15 mm. The keys basically provide a normal drop and clear pressure point. We liked its crisp resistance. In total the keyboard surprises with a good typing feel.


The multi-touch touchpad has a size of 10.6 x 6.1 cm, which provides plenty of room for gesture control. The pad's sleek surface allows the fingers to glide quite easily. The different gestures can be turned on and off singly in the pad's configuration menu. Two mouse buttons with a short drop and clear pressure point are below the pad.


A matte, 17.3-inch screen is installed. It has a native resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels.

This notebook is powered by a processor from Intel's brand new Skylake lineup. The CPU installed here bears the name Core i7-6700HQ. It is not a frugal ULV processor, but rather a standard mobile processor with a TDP of 45 watts. The processor clocks at a base speed of 2.6 GHz, which can be boosted to 3.1 GHz (four cores), 3.3 GHz (two cores) and 3.5 GHz (one core) via Turbo. The processor performed our CPU tests at 3.1 to 3.5 GHz (single-thread) and 2.6 to 3.1 GHz (multi-thread). Thus, the CPU remains behind its potential in multi-thread applications. The processor clocked stably at 1.6 GHz in battery mode.

The Intel Core i7-6700HQ is a quad-core processor based on the Skylake architecture, that has been launched in September 2015. In addition to four CPU cores with Hyper-Threading clocked at 2.6 - 3.5 GHz (4 cores: max. 3.1 GHz, 2 cores: max. 3.3 GHz), the chip also integrates an HD Graphics 530 GPU and a dual-channel DDR4-2133/DDR3L-1600 memory controller. The CPU is manufactured using a 14 nm process with FinFET transistors.


Skylake replaces both Haswell and Broadwell and brings the same microarchitecture in every TDP class from 4.5 to 45 W. The extensive improvements of the Skylake design include increased out-of-order buffers, optimized prefetching and branch prediction as well as additional performance gains through Hyper-Threading.


According to the specified clock rates and the improved architecture, the Core i7-6700HQ performs roughly on par with the former, somewhat higher clocked Core i7-4900MQ or i7-4810MQ (Haswell). Under long-lasting full load, the Skylake chip will take the lead over Haswell-based predecessors, as the advanced 14 nm process leads to a higher energy efficiency and reduces throttling.

Even the most demanding applications and excessive multitasking are handled easily.


The integrated graphics unit called HD Graphics 530 represents the "GT2" version of the Skylake GPU (Intel Gen. 9). The 24 Execution Units, also called EUs, are clocked at 350 - 1050 MHz and offer a performance about 20 percent above the old HD Graphics 4600. Games of 2015 can thus be played smoothly in low or medium settings.

Power Consumption

Specified at a TDP of 45 W (including CPU, GPU and memory controller), the CPU is best suited for bigger notebooks 15-inches in size and above. Optionally, the TDP can be lowered to 35 watts (cTDP down), reducing both heat dissipation and performance.

HI-TECH uses only full-copper heatpipe cooling. This type of cooling ensures optimal conditions and makes this unique notebook: While HI-TECH only uses this technology, other manufacturers often obstruct only inferior aluminum / copper hybrid or even pure aluminum coolers. These have a much worse cooling performance. Especially in gaming applications when devices are heavily used, there is a risk that the unit overheats. This leads to the fact that the individual components down contacts for reasons of protection, which minimizes the power of the device enormously. In the worst case, there could be breakdowns and could shorten the life lead. With the HI-TECH-copper heatpipe cooling in contrast the notebook is perfectly chilled even under extreme stress!

Need some examples? Maximum 34.9 ° C on the top and a maximum of 34.5 ° C on the bottom are given the high performance, a very low value. Make long gaming sessions are extremely comfortable, more than 24.5 ° C we could not measure on the palm rest. In idle mode, not even a temperature of 28.4 ° C is exceeded.

One might assume that the low surface temperatures expense of its components. But thought wrong: In our several-hour full load test (Furmark & Prime), the processor and the graphics card was far from critical regions, a maximum of 76 respectively 80 ° C gave the CPUID from Hardware Monitor. In idle mode, the components are shuttled one to nearly 40 ° C.

The technical specifications of the GTX 960M are not very spectacular because the predecessor was already based on the Maxwell architecture. There was a Kepler version of the GTX 860M that had an MXM interface as well as 80% more shader units, but it was rarely used due to the lower performance. Look at the most important specs and you can see that the GTX 960M and the Maxwell version of the GTX 860M are very similar. Both GPUs are based on the GM107 chip and can use 640 Unified Shaders as well as 2,048-4,096 MB GDDR5 video memory, which is attached via 128-bit memory interface.

Smaller differences are revealed when you look at the core clock: Instead of 1,029-1,097 MHz, NVIDIA increases the clock of the GTX 960M to 1,097-1,202 MHz, which results in an advantage of 7-10%. According to the tool GPU-Z you also get higher values for the pixel fill rate, the texture fill rate and the number of TMUs, although this might also be a bug in the application. But small improvements or not: The graphics cards hardly differ in practice, which is also confirmed by our benchmarks.

The hardware specifications are much weaker compared to the top models. The GTX 980M has more than twice as many shaders (1,536 CUDA cores) and 4 up to 8 GB GDDR5 video memory (256-bit interface) is better for the future as well. The GTX 970M is also better suited for gaming when you consider the 1,280 shaders and 3 up to 6 GB video memory (192-bit interface).

All in all, the performance of the GTX 960M is close to the GTX 965M, which also suffers from the small memory interface (128-bit) in some titles and even has a slightly lower clock (924-950 MHz). Still, thanks to the higher number of shaders (GM204 chip with 1,024 CUDA cores), the GTX 965M is faster nonetheless.

The battery lasted for 5:24 hours in idle mode. Idle mode is simulated via Battery Eater's Reader's test using the screen's minimum brightness, enabled energy savings plan, and disabled radio modules. The load runtime is ascertained using Battery Eater's Classic test with maximum screen brightness and the "High Performance" profile. The laptop stopped the Wi-Fi test after 4:18 hours. 

Websites are opened automatically every 40 seconds using the "Balanced" profile and a screen brightness of approximately 150 cd/m² in this test. We check the video playback time by running the short movie Big Buck Bunny (H.265 encoding, 1920 x 1080 pixels) in a loop.

The wireless modules are disabled and the screen's brightness is set to approximately 150 cd/m². The notebook managed a runtime of 3:48 hours.

We also tested the gaming runtime by running the in-game benchmark of the race game GRID: Autosport (1920 x 1080 pixels, Very High, 4x MSAA) in a loop. The 17-inch laptop achieved a runtime of 1:08 hours here.

Windows 10 is the Goldilocks version of Microsoft's venerable PC operating system -- a "just right" compromise between the familiar dependability of Windows 7, and the forward-looking touchscreen vision of Windows 8.

This new Windows, available as a free upgrade for existing Windows 7 and Windows 8 noncorporate users, is built from the ground up to pursue Microsoft's vision of a unified OS that spans all devices without alienating any one platform. It's an attempt to safeguard Microsoft's crumbling software hegemony, assailed on all sides by Google and Apple. And it's a vision of the future as Microsoft sees it, where a single user experience spans every piece of technology we touch. Welcome to Windows as a service.

Yes, this new OS is chock-full of fresh features. To name just a few: a lean, fast Internet Explorer replacement called Edge; Microsoft's Siri-like voice-controlled virtual assistant, Cortana; and the ability to stream real-time games to your desktop from an Xbox One in another room. (And in case you're wondering: there is no "Windows 9" -- Microsoft skipped it, going straight from 8 to 10.)

But Windows 10 is also the end of a long, awkward road that began with the release of Windows 8 in 2012, when Microsoft tried to convince a world of keyboard and mouse wielders that touchscreens were the way to go -- or else. Ironically, in 2015, the PC hardware for that touchscreen future is now here -- everything from 2-in-1s such as the Lenovo Yoga line to convertible tablets with detachable keyboards, like Microsoft's own Surface. And Windows 10 smoothly lets users transition from "tablet" to "PC" mode on such devices like never before.

For the rest of the PC universe -- including those who still prefer good old-fashioned keyboard and mouse navigation -- Windows 10 is a welcome return to form. The Start menu, inexplicably yanked from 8, is back and working the way you expect it to. Those live tiles from the Windows 8 home screen still exist, but they've been attached to the Start menu, where they make a lot more sense. And the fiendishly hidden Charms bar has been morphed into the more straightforward (and easier to find) Action Center.

As always, there are some quibbles and gripes with the end product, but all-in-all -- after living with Windows 10 for months -- I can say it's a winner. It's flexible, adaptable and customizable. And it's been battle-tested by an army of beta testers for the better part of a year, making it one of the most robust operating system rollouts in recent memory.

A fresh Start

The Start menu is back; it's almost funny how relieving that is. That humble Start button has been a fixture on the lower left corner of the Windows desktop since the halcyon days of Windows 95, offering speedy access to apps and settings. Press it on Windows 10, and you'll see the latest step in a long conversation about the state of the PC industry.

The past sits on the left: a neat column with shortcuts to your most used apps. Press the "All Apps" button and you'll get an alphabetical list of all of the apps installed on your PC. There are folders in there too -- press them, and extra options will fly out, just like they always have.

The future -- or at least, the future as Microsoft envisions it -- sits on the right side of the Start menu. These are the colorful, animated live tiles that debuted in Windows 8, pulling double duty as app shortcuts and informative widgets. You can resize these live tiles, drag them about to arrange them into groups and pin as many apps as you'd like -- the entire Start menu can be shrunk or expanded to suit your liking. It's essentially a miniaturized version of the fullscreen Start menu we saw in Windows 8. Hate live tiles? Then unpin them to excise them from your computer, leaving you with the narrow column of frequently used apps we've known for so long.

I use this laptop for school and gaming. It is perfect for both. The screen is beautiful and also very big. The keyboard is very nice and smooth for typing long texts. The laptop itself is very fast. I wouldn't buy this laptop if you are mainly going to browse the internet on it or use it for school/work. It has way too many tweaks on it to waste it on such things. I use this laptop for school and gaming. It is perfect for both. The screen is beautiful and also very big. The keyboard is very nice and smooth for typing long texts. The laptop itself is very fast. I wouldn't buy this laptop if you are mainly going to browse the internet on it or use it for school/work. It has way too many tweaks on it to waste it on such things. It costed a lot of money but it was worth the buy.

Da ich wirklich nur World of Warcraft und Fifa 12 damit spiele kann ich nicht sagen was alles möglich ist, aber es ist ein Top Gerät und lässt die Spiele nochmal frischer wirken. Warum auch immer schwitzt meine linke Hand etwas stärker als sonst bei der W,A,S,D Auflage. Hatte ich bis jetzt noch nicht, gebe aber keinen Punktabzug da ich nicht sagen kann ob es wirklich am Gerät liegt.

Wie gesagt, das Gesamtpaket hat das Rennen gemacht. Ich spiele selbst hauptsächlich *** und MMORPGs und wollte einfach einen PC, der schnell ist und eben auch grafisch die Sache schön darstellt. Und eben einen, den man schon ein paar Jaare länger hernehmen kann und nicht gleich nach 1 Jahr wieder ersetzen muss, weil er nicht mehr mitkommt. Auch Filme laufen problemlos und ohne ruckeln. Sound ist super. Was mir besonders gefällt ist die Tastatur. Sie fasst sich super an und die Tasten haben einen schön knackigen Druckpunkt, gerade das vermisse ich oft.
