The Silent Midi Tower Antec P101 Silent is equipped with noise insulation in the front, cover and side panels. The chassis is made of sturdy steel. After removing the left side wall, the white mainboard tray is immediately visible. Main boards up to E-ATX can be installed here. There are four black and four white PCI slot covers in the back - the P101 Silent has space for eight expansion cards or 4-way SLI and crossfire systems.

Graphics cards can be up to 290 millimeters long. After removing the drive cage installed in the front, which can accommodate eight 3.5-inch or 2.5-inch drives on slides, there is space for pixel accelerators with a maximum length of 450 millimeters. Cooling with air and water. Three 120 mm or two 140 mm fans can be installed in the front and there is space for a 140 or 120 fan on the back of the case. CPU coolers must not exceed a height of 180 millimeters. Four 120 mm fans are pre-installed at the factory: one in the back and three in the front. If you choose water cooling, the Antec P101 Silent offers the option of installing a 360, 280 or 240 radiator in the front and space for a 140 or 120 mm heat exchanger in the rear.

The power supply cover is a total of 290 millimeters long and thus offers space for very powerful power supplies and storage space for cables. Intelligent cable management with two centimeters of storage space behind the mainboard tray and rubberized cable tunnels guides the power connections and data cables through the housing in an orderly manner and ensures optimal airflow.

The Intel Core i9-12900 is a high-end CPU based on the new Alder Lake architecture. The total of 24 threads are divided into P cores and E cores, which are being introduced with the new Alder Lake architecture. The 8 performance cores (P cores) also offer hyperthreading. The 8 energy-efficient E-Cores cannot fall back on this feature. Intel has finally dared to take the next step in chip production and has the current Alder Lake-S processors manufactured in 10nm. The non-K model is a special version that is specified with a TDP of only 65 watts. Nevertheless, the model can only use a maximum of 202 watts.

Compared to the Intel Core i9-12900K, the Core i9-12900 offers the same number of P and E cores. In total, there are therefore 24 threads that the new Intel Core i9-12900 can process. However, due to the lower TDP, the performance is still a bit inferior to the K model if we take the PL2 value as a reference. Compared to Rocket Lake, however, the Intel Core i9-12900 can clearly demonstrate its advantages in terms of increased IPC.

Let's take a look at the performance data: the Core i9-12900 is only slightly slower than the top model in single-threaded applications. The 100 MHz lower boost clock rates certainly play a role here, but only a small one.

The Samsung OEM SSD PM9A1 is made entirely of semiconductor components and uses NAND flash memory, which has high reliability and advanced technology in a small form factor. As an HDD, the Toshiba P300 can of course not keep up with the performance of an SSD, but at least it costs only a fraction of correspondingly large SSDs such as the Samsung 960 Pro. In comparison with its HDD counterparts, the transfer rates of the P300 are still good. The hard drive achieved a read rate of 198 MB / s in the test. The same can be said about the writing speed of the P300. In the test, our test files are written to the large memory at a rate of 195 Mbyte / s - the access time is a good 6.88 milliseconds. At least among the 4TB models, we have measured the best results with the P300 so far.

With a great price-performance ratio, the Toshiba P300 with a capacity of four terabytes is aimed at PC users with large amounts of data and a tight budget. Despite the low price, the hard drive does well in the test and can convince with transfer rates of almost 200 MB per second.

Windows start

Microsoft already shortened the start times of Windows extremely with Windows 8. If the computer is switched off using "Shut down", it does not switch itself off, but only goes into hibernation - from which it can wake up more quickly. Even with a real Katlstart or restart, Windows 8.1 is slightly slower: However, over time, Windows remembers the files that it needs for the start: The start time is shortened with repeated starts. After ten starts, the two operating systems were almost on par with 20 seconds (Windows 10) and 22 seconds (Windows 8.1).

System performance

Windows is actually getting faster and faster the older it gets: For most components, manufacturers are releasing ever more up-to-date drivers that accelerate the hardware. Windows feels like it is getting slower and slower: This is mostly due to the fact that the autostart folder is filling up with more and more entries, more and more tools are running in the background and more and more programs that are no longer used are littering the memory. The performance tests show hardly any difference between Windows 8.1 and Windows 10. Sometimes one system is faster, sometimes the other. But all the results are so closely related - with less than three percent difference - that no difference is noticeable in practice. This also applies to tests such as Cinebench R15, which primarily check the processor performance. Even if we repeated the tests several times, nothing changed: When saving and buffering frequently used files, nothing seems to have changed between Windows 8.1 and 10. Conclusion: When it comes to hardware performance, Windows 10 is as fast as Windows 8.1 - or vice versa. So that Windows 10 stays fast, the same rules apply as always with Windows: Install the latest drivers and keep the system clean.

3D performance

Windows 10 comes with the new Direct X12 3D interface. DX12 is designed to allow game programmers to use the capabilities of the GPU more efficiently. Computers with less powerful graphics cards can also benefit from this and display graphically complex games more smoothly. At the moment, the potential of DX12 can only be demonstrated using synthetic benchmarks such as the API overhead test. Conclusion: Windows 10 has the potential to accelerate games on weaker systems thanks to the DX12. But the concrete results will only show games that use DX12. The first should appear at the end of the year.
