The Core i7-11700K offers eight physical cores and can process up to 16 threads simultaneously thanks to SMT (Hyper-Threading) support. The base clock is 3.6 GHz, the highest turbo clock frequency in single-threading load increases to 5 GHz. As a new highlight, the Core i7-11700K also has 20 PCIe 4.0 lanes, 16 of which are primarily intended for the graphics card and the remaining four lanes for a PCIe 4.0 x4 SSD.

With eight cores, but without velocity and adaptive boost, the Octacore still clocks with 4.6 GHz all-core and 5.0 GHz single-core. This is 100 MHz lower than the previous Core i7-10700K. Compared to the i9-11900K, there are not only cuts in the clock frequency, according to the Intel specification in Gear 1 mode, the memory controller can only clock with a maximum of DDR4-2933 MHz, with Gear 2 up to DDR4-3200 is possible. In terms of single-threaded and IPC performance, the Cypress Cove architecture is a significant step forward - especially compared to what we have seen over and over again in recent years with the numerous Skylake reissues. We're actually talking about + 20% IPC performance, which Intel brings back to the level of AMD's Zen 3 architecture in this regard. Intel can exploit this primarily in applications in which only a few cores are used. Above all, however, Intel is clearly targeting gamers as buyers of its new processors. If we look at the corresponding benchmarks, we can actually say that Intel has once again put the player's crown on the table. But the truth is also that you don't clearly beat AMD with the Ryzen 5000 processors, but the gaps here are so small that you can speak of a tie. Gamers who choose an output resolution of 1080p and higher and a corresponding level of detail are limited by the GPU performance of both AMD and Intel.

What is the fundamental difference between the Z590 chipset and the Z490: the major changes include native USB 3.2 Gen2x2 support (20 GBit / s) on up to three Type-C interfaces, and Wi-Fi 6E support and the DMI (Direct Media Interface) drilled to PCIe 3.0 x8 as a connection between CPU (Northbridge) and chipset (Southbridge). With the new Rocket Lake S processors, the Z590 chipset now also allows a more flexible PCIe lane division. 1x16 or 2x8 or 1x8 and 2x4 became 1x16 + 1x4 or 2x8 + 1x4 or even 1x 8 and 3x4. The Z490 chipset offers a maximum of six USB 3.2 Gen2 ports. With the Z590-PCH, Intel has now increased this limit to ten interfaces.

On the MSI Z590-A PRO WIFI, the manufacturer has taken into account a passive cooler for the M.2 slot via the processor. Since a PCIe 4.0 x4 SSD can also be used in combination with the eleventh core generation (Rocket Lake-S), this definitely makes sense for thermal reasons.

But MSI has now also fundamentally changed the look. White vertical and horizontal stripes were attached to the black PCB, which bring a breath of fresh air, but are still a matter of taste. The same look can also be found on the VRM cooler, next to the new MSI logo. As usual, up to 128 GB of RAM can be stowed in the four DDR4 UDIMM memory banks. In connection with two single-rank modules, MSI specifies an effective memory clock rate of 5,333 MHz. It should be up to 4,700 MHz with two dual-rank DIMMs. A fully connected PCIe x16 slot goes to work itself via the LGA1200 CPU. The PCIe 4.0 standard can only be used if a Rocket Lake S CPU is installed in the socket and the top M.2 interface with a maximum of PCIe 4.0 x4 can also be used.

After NVIDIA launched the GeForce RTX 3080 Ti on the market in week 22, the next model is now following: the GeForce RTX 3070 Ti. Here, too, NVIDIA is increasing the expansion of the ampere GPU, probably with the Radeon RX 6800 more clearly in the barriers to refer or to get a little closer to the Radeon RX 6800 XT.

There is the GA104 graphics chip, which celebrated its debut in October 2020 with the RTX 3070, but has only been able to show what it is really made of in a professional environment. This is over now, the fillet pieces of GPU production are used on the Geforce RTX 3070 Ti: Chips with the ending "400" and thus the full configuration. This alone does not make up much ground, which is why Nvidia makes use of a previously unused feature of the GA104: GDDR6X support. So far, the 256-bit wide memory interface of all GA104 models was equipped with 14 GT / s fast GDDR6-without-X memory, which led to a transfer rate of 448 GByte / s. The Geforce RTX 3070 Ti, on the other hand - like the RTX 3080 (Ti) - can use GDDR6X with 19 gigatransfers per second to copy data at 608 GByte / s. That is almost 36 percent faster and therefore a significant plus. The other performance parameters around a 4 MiByte level 2 cache depend directly on the memory controller and are therefore identical to the RTX 3070.

The RTX 3070 Ti achieves a good ten to fifty percent higher performance than the already comfortably fast RTX 3070 and can therefore basically satisfy almost all requirements, provided that WQHD gaming is the desired goal at most. Although the new ampere card is just below the Radeon RX 6800 when it comes to rasterizing, it can be around 21 percent behind when it comes to ray tracing. The warm feeling in the stomach area is also psychologically valuable, with the RTX 3070 Ti receiving the best, fully active GA104 chips and fast-paced GDDR6X memory. Modern game code is becoming more and more floating point, so time is an ally. Added to this are the improvements in the ray tracing and tensor units which, with appropriate programming, bring performance increases of up to 100 percent compared to Turing.

The Samsung OEM SSD PM9A1 is made entirely of semiconductor components and uses NAND flash memory, which has high reliability and advanced technology in a small form factor. It was not too many years ago that the idea of a 1TB drive was almost mind-boggling. However, with the continued explosion of digital data, including large-file-size games that support hi-resolution and/or 3D graphics, HD movies, HD music (and more), the need to store that data now makes a 1TB HDD not seem all that large. Also, enterprise storage systems are experiencing similar (if not even greater) growth, so more storage capacity with fewer drives is always going to be an attractive option. Hence, the market is definitely there for ever-larger capacity HDDs. 

Toshiba’s DT01ACA300 HDD is a consistent performer.  In our testing, it attained over 190MB/s sequential reads and writes for all transfer sizes of 16KB and larger, being under 190MB/s for only the smallest 1/3 of the transfer sizes. This demonstrates a high level of consistent performance.  Our testing gave us a total score that was 20% higher than other similar drives. Our PCMark Vantage HDD suite testing gave us a total score that was 10% higher than other similar drives.  In our HD Tune Pro testing, we even saw burst speeds of nearly 418MB/s, this is flash storage territory.

Toshiba’ DT01ACA300 HDD is a top-performing mechanical drive. We saw a number of benchmark results that best any of the 3TB mechanical HDDs that we have previously tested.  Note that in the PCMark Vantage testing, this HDD excelled with both Windows Media Center and Windows Photo Gallery – in other words, content creation.  Although this drive is marketed as a client HDD, we are seeing performance that should also appeal to media professionals and other content creators, and 3TB of capacity in a single drive to boot.

The launch of Windows 10 and the associated developments are among the most important market launches in Microsoft's corporate history. Windows 10 not only brings a new version of the operating system onto the market, Windows 10 enables a new platform generation:
 
"We want to ensure that we offer developers the largest and most vibrant user base for their applications," said Satya Nadella in his opening keynote at BUILD 2015 in San Francisco. Windows 10 is now available in 190 countries and 111 languages.

The browser is really new in Windows 10: Edge replaces Internet Explorer. The new browser doesn't just have the cooler name. It is also much faster. In almost all browser benchmarks, Edge depends on IE 11 from Windows 8.1. It can almost double its pace in Mozilla's Kraken benchmark. It looks the same in Google's Octane 2.0 test. Its pace remains roughly the same in the Sunspider test and the Peacekeeper benchmark. Conclusion: When it comes to the browser speed, Windows 10 with Edge catches up a lot. In Kraken and Octane, Edge overtakes the competition, in the Sunspider he stays ahead. The old conditions are only preserved in the Peacekeeper test.

Windows start

Microsoft already shortened the start times of Windows extremely with Windows 8. If the computer is switched off using "Shut down", it does not switch itself off, but only goes into hibernation - from which it can wake up more quickly. Even with a real Katlstart or restart, Windows 8.1 is slightly slower: However, over time, Windows remembers the files that it needs for the start: The start time is shortened with repeated starts. After ten starts, the two operating systems were almost on par with 20 seconds (Windows 10) and 22 seconds (Windows 8.1).

System performance

Windows is actually getting faster and faster the older it gets: For most components, manufacturers are releasing ever more up-to-date drivers that accelerate the hardware. Windows feels like it is getting slower and slower: This is mostly due to the fact that the autostart folder is filling up with more and more entries, more and more tools are running in the background and more and more programs that are no longer used are littering the memory. The performance tests show hardly any difference between Windows 8.1 and Windows 10. Sometimes one system is faster, sometimes the other. But all the results are so closely related - with less than three percent difference - that no difference is noticeable in practice. This also applies to tests such as Cinebench R15, which primarily check the processor performance. Even if we repeated the tests several times, nothing changed: When saving and buffering frequently used files, nothing seems to have changed between Windows 8.1 and 10. Conclusion: When it comes to hardware performance, Windows 10 is as fast as Windows 8.1 - or vice versa. So that Windows 10 stays fast, the same rules apply as always with Windows: Install the latest drivers and keep the system clean.

3D performance

Windows 10 comes with the new Direct X12 3D interface. DX12 is designed to allow game programmers to use the capabilities of the GPU more efficiently. Computers with less powerful graphics cards can also benefit from this and display graphically complex games more smoothly. At the moment, the potential of DX12 can only be demonstrated using synthetic benchmarks such as the API overhead test. Conclusion: Windows 10 has the potential to accelerate games on weaker systems thanks to the DX12. But the concrete results will only show games that use DX12. The first should appear at the end of the year.

Windows 10 lays a good foundation: the hardware manufacturers have to use this to tease out a performance plus with improved drivers. Or in the case of Direct X12 game programmers who use the capabilities of the new interface in games.
