A brief history of the Final Fantasy video game series
Since its debut in 1987, the series - designed by Hironobu Sakaguchi - has evolved from a last glimmer of hope for a struggling development studio into a global cultural phenomenon. With its blend of turn-based combat, medieval fantasy world, epic soundtrack by Nobuo Uematsu, and strategic depth, Final Fantasy set new standards for role-playing games. The global breakthrough came with Final Fantasy VII and the still-popular characters Cloud and Sephiroth.
A central feature of the series is its anthological structure: Each numbered installment tells a standalone story with new characters, worlds, and game systems. Nevertheless, all titles share certain motifs and elements, such as summons (e.g., Ifrit, Shiva), the Active-Time-Battle system, magical crystals, and thematic focuses like identity, fate, war, and technology.
The series includes over 15 main titles, numerous spin-offs (Final Fantasy Tactics, Dissidia, Crisis Core, Final Fantasy XIV as an MMORPG), as well as crossovers with other franchises.
