With the third part of the series, we probably don’t need to explain the setting to any fan of the franchise. The story takes place in various historical eras of Japan (Edo, Sengoku, Heian, and Bakumatsu) and once again features skill-based combat against demonic hordes and tactically demanding end bosses.

We would like to use the February 2026 release more as an opportunity to briefly philosophize about genre branding in the video game industry. Because you probably already know all the essential information about the new part from various YouTube videos or major gaming magazine websites. We find it more interesting how quickly game developers want to place their work in a specific genre to address the right target audience.

Play Nioh 3 on a HI-TECH PC

Examples include first-person shooters (like BF6), MOBAs (Multiplayer Online Battle Arenas), MMORPGs (like FFXIV: Dawntrail), battle royale games (like Fortnite), or turn-based strategy games (like X-COM). Every major game developer wants their work to be quickly assigned to a category so they can reach the corresponding gameplay fans with their marketing. According to this logic, Nioh 3 clearly belongs to the soulslike games. So any fan of the Dark Souls games will immediately feel at home in Japan.

We don’t think this strategy of the developers is bad or reprehensible. With the flood of games coming onto the market every year, this categorization provides a bit of orientation beyond major franchises. The downside of this pigeonhole thinking is that it stifles new concepts. Twenty years ago, the boundaries in the video game world were less strictly defined, which encouraged developers to make new discoveries and be creative. Today you really have to search to find a completely new gaming experience. Unfortunately, no new categories like MMORPGs are being invented anymore; the existing genres are simply being served.

On the other hand, experiments can cost a lot of money. At least when it comes to hardware, you won’t have to pay any tuition fees with these models. We have the right Nioh 3 PC for you for the three most popular settings / specs.
